Fly-Fishing Photography 101:

How to Capture What You See

Carol Ann Morris is a fly-fishing photographer, videographer, and artist/illustrator, and she partners with her husband, fly designer and author Skip Morris on his fly-fishing books, articles, and instructional videos. Her Etsy store, CarolAMorrisFlyFish, features photos, artwork, and custom pieces that reflect her love of fly fishing. Prior to being self-employed as a full-time artist and photographer, Carol worked as a small animal veterinarian (both as a practice owner and relief vet), and is now retired from that work after 30 years.

Over the past two decades, Carol's photographs and paintings have appeared not only in most of her husband Skip's 21 fly-fishing and fly-tying books, but also on the covers and interior pages of such magazines and books as Grey's Sporting Journal, Fly Fisherman, Yale Angler's Journal, American Angler, Fly Fishing & Tying Journal, and America's Favorite Flies.

Carol’s presentation takes an in-depth look at how to use color, composition, and light to take your photography to the next level, and make your photos come alive.

Fly Fishers want to record their biggest and most beautiful fish, the fascinating rivers and lakes and beaches they fish and explore--the very heart of their beloved sport--with a camera. Carol teaches them how to make their photos crisp and vivid, balanced and expressive. She demonstrates and explains the Rule of Thirds, effective use of light, the Magic Hour, UFOs (Unidentified Foreign Objects), how to photograph fish, and many other straightforward concepts anyone can use to improve their photographs. Also, Carol will show various failed photos and explain what caused the problems.

Opportunity to get your pictures Reviewed / Critiqued by Carol

Hey, SDFF club members! We are looking for your pictures to use for a Live Photo Critique from Carol after her presentation. Please submit your photos in advance here by Wednesday, October 28th. Submit a maximum of 3. The file size does not matter; original resolutions preferred.

Details from Carol:

“Without a doubt, one of the best ways to understand how to improve your photographs is to participate in a photo critique. This is a process we all learn from, and it is not about good or bad, right or wrong; it is simply looking at what you were trying to capture, and how, through simple steps, you can improve and expand the vision you had for your image. It is easy for all of us, no matter what our level of experience, to get locked into a certain way of looking at our images, and what we were trying to capture. A critique opens up a whole new way of seeing, and the results and insights you get can be remarkable and jaw-dropping.

A critique tends to work best when you submit photos, you're having trouble with, not the ones that are your best shots. It is, for all of us, the problems we have with a photo that give us the deepest insights into how to take our vision further and improve. I have participated in many critiques myself, and though it can be daunting, it is the single most effective way I've pushed the limits on getting exceptional shots.

You can submit your best shots, but there may not be much to say or share about them except that they are great. There can be some discussion on why they are good, but it is the shots that you just couldn't quite get to work that will give all of us the most insight on how to improve.

The photos used will be opened and edited in Adobe Lightroom. I'll work through each one using the features of the applicaiton. After the presentation, all photos from the critique will be deleted.

3rdWedSpeaker

Would you like to be a 3rd Wednesday Speaker ???

Our programs chairperson Tim Huckaby says:

We have so much talent and expertise in the club that we have decided to augment our “normal” club meeting and presentation (every 1st Monday of the month) with a mostly club member presentation on the 3rd Wednesday of each month this year. Those of you that have joined the virtual club meetings you know we have had a lot of success. We sure have learned a lot and been entertained by some pillars of the fly fishing industry. Honestly, it has been easier for me to recruit speakers to do virtual presentations because I don’t take them out of their day jobs for stretches of travel to San Diego. We’ll continue our “normal” first Monday of the month meetings with “big name” speakers, virtually, until we can finally meet in person as a club again….which is not looking like any time soon. We have quite the lineup scheduled already for 2021. It’s not the same as meeting in person. I get that. I miss meeting in person too. But, the virtual thing is gonna’ have to do for while until the world gets ahead of the pandemic.

So…I’m on the hunt for you experts in the club that would be willing to do a virtual presentation and/or virtual Q&A for us on a 3rd Wednesday this year. Please contact me by email, programs@sandiegoflyfishers.com or my cell, 619-990-9200 to discuss. Don’t be surprised if I find you with a little help from other club members and proactively reach out to you for the ask.
